Which M1 Professional or M1 Max Mac Ought to You Get?

Apple's new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models offer almost all the functions that professional users have wanted from the company for years. These computers bring massive leaps in performance, efficiency, and battery life that the laptop market hasn't seen in years. Plus, they're seeing the return of useful ports like SDXC, HDMI, and MagSafe charging.

Unlike previous MacBook models, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro offer similar specifications and features. There's no significant difference in performance between them, and regardless of their size, you can configure these machines with the same RAM, storage, and Apple silicon chip.

If you're planning on buying the new MacBook Pro but don't know which size to choose – 14 "or 16" – read our guide below to find the answer.

You should buy the 16-inch MacBook Pro if you …

1. The largest possible display

If you are always on the go and need the largest possible display on your MacBook, the 16-inch model is just right for you. The resolution and display of the 16-inch M1 Pro or M1 Max MacBook Pro are slightly larger than the Intel-based 16-inch MacBook Pro, so you can accommodate even more content on the display.

Very few laptops on the market have a large and beautiful display and offer the performance that the 16-inch MacBook Pro can offer. It's ideal for video editors, photo editors, and anyone working with video, as the larger display makes it much easier to create content on the go.

2. The best possible performance

Both the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro can be configured with the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. While there isn't a significant difference in performance between the two machines when they pack identical chips, the 16-inch M1 Max MacBook Pro has a High Power Mode that boosts performance when color grading 8K ProRes videos or other similarly intensive tasks.

This mode is absent from the 14-inch MacBook Pro, so color grading 8K videos isn't as smooth.

3. Longer battery life

The larger case of the 16-inch MacBook Pro means Apple can fit a larger battery in it. This in turn means that the 16-inch MacBook Pro can last significantly longer than its 14-inch brother. Apple claims that the 16-inch MacBook Pro can stream content from Apple TV + for 21 hours, while the smaller model lasts for 17 hours. So if battery life is your priority, the 16-inch MacBook Pro is the obvious choice.

Note that the 16-inch MacBook Pro can only be charged quickly through MagSafe with a 140W USB-C power adapter. This is different from the smaller 14-inch MacBook Pro, which can also be charged quickly via its USB-C ports.

4. Better sounding speakers

The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro have a six-speaker setup. However, due to physical size differences, the speaker setup on the 16-inch MacBook Pro sounds slightly better than the 14-inch model. It's a little different, but if you want the absolute best speaker system on your MacBook Pro, you have to go for the 16-inch model.

You should buy the 14-inch MacBook Pro if you …

1. Better portability

The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros are heavier than the models they replace. The new 16-inch MacBook Pro, in particular, is thicker and not as portable as the Intel model it is replacing. If mobility is important to you, go for the 14-inch MacBook Pro.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro is significantly lighter than the 16-inch MacBook Pro – 1.6 kg versus 2.1 kg – and is therefore easier to transport. At 0.61 inches, it's also slightly thinner than the 16-inch MacBook Pro's 0.66-inch waist.

2. The best bang for your buck

With the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro now available with the same M1 Pro or M1 Max chips, there isn't a huge difference in performance between them. This also means that the smaller 14-inch MacBook Pro is more bang for your buck than its bigger brother, especially if you don't need the latter model's larger display and longer battery life.

If you're on a tight budget, the 14-inch MacBook Pro makes the most sense for you, as it's a few hundred dollars cheaper than its 16-inch brother. The 14-inch MacBook Pro is priced at $ 1,999, while the 16-inch MacBook Pro starts at $ 2,499. With similar performance, there is no reason for you to buy the larger MacBook, especially if you are on a tight budget.

You can also consider buying the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro if you don't have a demanding workload. Read our comparison of these models if you're not sure about the differences.

If you value performance and efficiency and just want a machine that can handle whatever you throw at it, you simply can't go wrong with the new MacBook Pro – no matter what size you choose.
