Three Methods to Delete Duplicate App Icons From the Mac Launchpad

Are there multiple versions of the same app in the Launchpad on your Mac? Here are three quick ways to fix it.

If you keep using your Mac, you may rarely come across duplicate icons of the same app on the Launchpad. This happens when the launchpad database goes down after an app update. It's an eyesore, but macOS usually does this on its own after a while.

However, if you're in a hurry, the following methods are a quick way to delete duplicate app icons on Mac's Launchpad.

1. Move an app to the trash and put it back

This is a simple solution which involves moving the problematic app to the Mac's Trash and then moving it back to the Applications folder. The action will delete any duplicate Launchpad icons related to the app. Just follow these steps:

  1. Open a new Finder window, select Applications Drag the app in the sidebar to the rubbish. Or Ctrl + click the app and select move to Trash. You may need to enter your administrator password to complete the action.

  2. Remove any stuck instances of the app icon from the dock. To do this, hold down the Ctrl key and click the icon, go to Options, and choose Remove from dock.

  3. Open that rubbish.

  4. Find and Ctrl + click the appropriate app. Then choose Hand back.

  5. Open that Launchpad. You probably won't see duplicate icons from the same app anymore.
