One of the best things about using Windows is the open nature of the platform. You can install any third-party app, including those that change the standard system functionality. One such app is Files.
Files is an open-source, community-developed file manager for Windows. From granular customization options to robust features, Files offers many features that cannot be found in the standard Windows file manager. So let's see how to install and use files, and how to make it your default file explorer.
How to change the default Windows File Explorer to Files
Previously, you could not use files as the default file explorer. Fortunately, Files added the feature in version 22.214.171.124 to make it the default file explorer on Windows.
First, download and install files. It is available free of charge from the Microsoft Store.
Next, open files and press the Gear icon in the upper right corner. This will open the settings menu.
Go to in the left sidebar Experimental, and under Standard file explorer switch the Set files as the default file explorer At.

Before you set files as your default app, however, be aware that you can't just delete the app later and expect the changes to be rolled back automatically. If you want to revert to the default Windows File Explorer, make sure to repeat the above steps and toggle the default files to Off.
Files has many useful functions for playing
Aside from looking modern and minimalist, Files has many other useful features. For example, you can customize the look by opening the settings window and navigating Appearance. Here you can change the color scheme and even set custom designs.
In addition, you can also customize the Explorer sidebar from the Settings menu. You can turn individual sections on or off as required.
Files is a great alternative to Windows File Explorer. It's quick, easy, and packed with powerful features. But maybe the best part about it is its open source nature. And because it's open source, it keeps getting better.
While Files adds a lot of extra functionality, Vanilla File Explorer is also pretty robust if you know how to use it. Learning the tips and tricks to improve Windows File Explorer has the potential to improve your Windows experience.
