Spicing up a conversion with GIFs can make things more fun and help you express your feelings. GIFs are also a great way to make online content like blog posts more attractive! However, finding the right GIF can be time consuming, and there isn't always a GIF that expresses what you want to say.
Creating your own GIFs is fun and opens up new possibilities. It's very easy to do thanks to these different GIF maker apps and websites.
Websites and desktop software
First up, let's take a look at the extremely clean and useful GIFs.com, a website that makes creating GIFs incredibly easy. First, paste the URL for the video that you want to use as the basis for your GIF. The website currently supports YouTube, Instagram, and Vine – or rather the Vine Archive (R.I.P.) – and users can upload their own video files as well.
Once you've chosen your source material, you'll be taken to a simple editor. Use the timeline below the video to choose the images you want to convert to a GIF. Then add text, stickers, and some effects if needed. There are also experimental features like ping pong and other effects to play with.
Once you're done tweaking, it's ready to share your GIF with the world. You can use the URL provided or you can download the GIF to upload again to another site.
Giphy has long been the default GIF search engine as its library is endless. With Giphy's own GIF maker, you can create and share your creations at the same time. It is very easy to use. Simply select your source material from YouTube, Vimeo or Giphy links and you can choose any part of the video to be converted to a GIF. You can also add subtitles if you want.
The process doesn't take long and the resulting GIFs are instantly uploaded to Giphy. From there, you can share them, download them directly, or tweak them using a variety of tools. For example, you can turn a collection of still images into a GIF or edit existing GIFs on the website. Overall, this is a powerful tool for any GIF fan that is worth checking out.
The two tools above are great if you want to use existing material to create a GIF. But what if you want to create original content? And then I thought … is exactly what you are looking for. This simple website turns your computer's webcam into a computer for making GIFs. Using it couldn't be easier. Just go to the website, click "I want to make a GIF" and activate your webcam.
Then just choose which of your captured images you want to keep and you can share your GIF. You can then copy the URL provided or download the GIF for your own use. Enjoy!
And then I was like …
Screen to GIF allows you to select part of your screen and record everything that happens in that particular area – or at least that's the idea. The software acts as a simple Windows application that simplifies the creation of GIFs. Launch the program and you have a few options.
The first option, Recorder, allows us to select an area of the screen to record. The second webcam allows you to capture GIFs with your computer's camera. With Board you can record your own drawings and with Editor you can edit existing GIFs.
First, click Recorder. You will see a frame window that you can resize to select the part of the screen you want.
Customize this via a video you want to turn into a GIF or an area of the screen you want to capture. When you're done, click the Record button. Click "Stop" when you have what you want and you will be taken to the edit screen.
From here you can delete sections of your recording and add subtitles, for example. Thanks to a tape-based interface, fans of Microsoft Office feel at home.
Screen to GIF
If you want to record part of your screen even more easily, RecordIT is what you are looking for. This simple application is located on the system tray or menu bar and allows you to start recording with just a few clicks.
Once installed, open the app, click the RecordIT icon in the system tray and select an area of the screen to record. Then click the Record button that appears. There is a share button on the website but it doesn't seem to work. It's best to just press the red and black GIF button in the lower right corner of your GIF. This will open a new tab with your GIF. Right click on the GIF image and choose Save Image As … to save your new GIF to your desktop. In the Save As screen that appears, you may need to select All Files or GIF for Files of type.
There's also an option for a Pro version on the Mac, as well as the ability to integrate with an app if developers are interested in the functionality.
