If you need to create a tutorial or share your gameplay with friends and followers, a screen recording app is an excellent option. Some applications may ask you to pay for full access. However, it's rarely worth pulling out your wallet.
The good news is you still have plenty of great free choices and we've found the best of the best.
OBS Studio (Windows, Mac, Linux)
As an open source project with a lot of work, OBS Studio is full of functions. You can customize video and audio recordings in real time with very detailed editing and mixing options, making the software ideal for creating some very professional productions. The modular user interface lets you focus on the tools you use most while bringing in video or audio from multiple sources to work with. Studio mode lets you preview everything before posting live video.
It is an excellent choice for the most demanding projects. However, if you haven't worked with video editing software a lot in the past, learning OBS can be a bit overwhelming and it can take you some time to master it. You may also need to do some research to find the right plugins for your specific needs, which will take even more time. For simple projects, a simpler tool might be a better choice.
Bandicam Free (Windows)
Bandicam's Slick app enables quick screen recording with easy-to-use professional features. These include screen selection for recording, real-time drawing while recording, use of real-time microphones while recording, and webcam overlays. You can even add your own logo to the video and, if you want, manage a mouse-based soundboard with sounds. There are also many setting specifications for recording different devices or certain modes, or for certain types of games. This is of course great when you combine it with a streaming service that you want to keep up to date with recorded videos.
Bandicam also has some more specific features for gamers, including a game FPS overlay and controls that streamers will especially appreciate when they want to spice up their streams.
However, it's important to note that while the free version of Bandicam is versatile, it will watermark all of your recordings. To get rid of the watermark, you have to pay the full $ 40 price to buy the app.
Apowersoft Free Online Screen Recorder (Web)
Apowersoft's solution for free screen recording is one of a kind: a web-based app that lets you start recording whatever you want right away. You can also download the app, but the web version is especially handy for those who need quick results for a specific project and don't want to hang an app on their computer afterwards.
That makes this software easy and so in many ways. You simply select the type of video you want to capture, the area of your screen and there you go. However, there are also options for exporting to a variety of formats, including GIFs. The recording function is versatile enough to add your webcam, record any audio source and edit the screencast in real time. You may be so impressed that you will never need another capture app again.
ScreenRec (Windows, Mac, Linux)
Perhaps you are in the screen recorder market, but you are looking for something that is business focused rather than personal use. In that case, ScreenRec might be what you need – it's for businesses with extensive screen recording needs. It quickly records videos and stores them in a dedicated cloud account that is protected by encryption. The user interface is simple but well designed. It is therefore ideal for training videos, presentations and tutorials. It's also quite well organized thanks to the file management system that is used to organize large amounts of videos as they are saved.
There is also great administrator tracking to see who on the system was watching the videos, including clients and colleagues. There are only two downsides to businesses. First of all, you may need to upgrade to pay for more cloud storage as you only get 2GB of free cloud storage through the Screenrec system. You cannot delete videos yourself either. You need to contact customer service.
FlashBack Express (Windows)
FlashBack Express is a straightforward, free app that is easy to use even for beginners. The user interface is clean and easy to use with special game settings. You can also use FlashBack Express to record video and audio, record webcam footage, and add comments about text, images, or effects. That's it! However, this app gets a lot of points because the recording times are unlimited and it doesn't contain watermarks. Uploading to YouTube is easy, but your export options are limited to MP4, AVI, and WMV with the free version.
Note that some features are only available if you pay for the upgrades. However, this is a good option for gamers who want to record and share footage.
