In the last few years I have been particularly interested in Network Attached Storage, or NAS for short. Since sharing large amounts of data from a standard desktop computer became problematic, the switch to NAS only made sense and now offers a central point for the daily sharing and storage of data in our office.
About two years ago, the perfect solution came to us in the form of the Synology Cube Station 407e. This NAS device supported four hard drives and was powered by a 266 MHz processor and 64 MB RAM. At the time, this was an impressive setup for a small office environment, though the CS407e could only do so much with limited performance.
Since then, I've tested a number of NAS devices, including Synology's proprietary Disk Station DS-509 +, which is designed for everything from office use to corporate data center work. This NAS device supports up to five hard drives and has a 1.06 GHz processor with 1 GB of storage. The improved performance made the DS-509 + a temptation I just couldn't resist, and the CS407e was eventually replaced, despite the high price tag of $ 1000.
In fact, the DS-509 + is far from affordable and significantly more expensive than the $ 360 CS407e we used to run. In our view, the ideal NAS device for today's SOHO users would therefore be performance similar to the DS-509 +, but at a price closer to the CS407e.
Synology is trying to achieve this with the latest 09 series Disk Station models released last month. The Disk Station DS-409 + that we will review today supports four hard drives with a powerful 1.06 GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM. These specs are similar to the DS-509 +, but at a price point of $ 600, we think they are a more achievable consumer target.
The DS-409 + is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses looking for a cost-effective solution for efficient data sharing and backup. In addition to the specifications described above, this new NAS device supports 2 TB hard drives and can therefore be configured with up to 8 TB of storage.
In addition, all Disk Station models of the 09 series are supplied with the Disk Station Manager 2.1 software. This software uses AJAX-based interface, adds the integration of new mail server functions with the installation of Mail Station add-on, improves Synology Surveillance Station, storage management, user management and permission management, and supports new languages.
