Slice and Cube Your Photographs by Cropping Them on PC or Mac

There's nothing more annoying than taking the biggest picture ever taken only to find a stranger in the background later. Thankfully, there are free and top-notch tools out there that make it easy to cut that pesky photo bomber out of the frame.

Windows 10

Use the Photos app

While Windows 10 still features the old Microsoft Paint tool we've known and loved since 1985, the Photos app is now the default viewer and editor. Cropping an image is easy.

Step 1: Right-click the image you want to crop and choose Open With from the pop-up menu, followed by Photos. If the Photos app is still your default viewer, you can just double-click the picture instead.

Step 2: With the image loaded into the app, click the Crop button on the toolbar as shown above.

S.Step 3: Use the mouse to drag the edges and set the cropping window. Alternatively, you can click the Aspect Ratio button to set a specific crop ratio, e.g. B. Widescreen or Square.

Step 4: Click the Save a Copy button or click the down arrow and choose Save to make changes to the original photo.

Use color

Microsoft Paint isn't exactly robust. It's not loaded with advanced tools or impressive features, but it remains in Windows 10 after Microsoft threatened to devalue the long-running tool in 2017. It's a popular stop for creating graphics from scratch and for making simple changes to photos, such as cropping.

Step 1: Right click the picture and choose Open With from the pop-up menu, followed by Paint.

Step 2: Click the Select button and drag the tool to include the part of the image that you want to crop.

Step 3: Click the Crop button just to the right of Select.

Step 4: Click File, then click Save to apply your changes to the original file, or choose Save As to save a copy of the edited image.

Use the snipping tool

Windows 10 includes other built-in tools that allow users to crop pictures with just a click and drag. It's aptly referred to as a snipping tool, and it's an easy way to crop and save images without any editing knowledge. However, Microsoft may downgrade this tool for the newer Snip & Sketch.

Step 1: Load the picture you want to crop onto the screen.

Step 2: Type "snip" into the taskbar search box and select "Snipping Tool" from the results.

Step 3: In the Snipping Tool window, click the New button.

Step 4: A transparent white overlay is drawn across the screen, and the mouse pointer turns into a crosshair. Click and drag the crosshairs to select the area you want to scan and crop and release the mouse to create a new cutout.

Step 5: The resulting screenshot is displayed in the app. Use the pen, highlighter, and eraser tools to modify the cropped image if necessary.

Note: The multi-colored teardrop logo allows users to open their snippets in Paint 3D for better image editing.

Step 6: Click File, then click Save As to save the cropped screenshot to your PC.

Use Snip & Sketch

Snip & Sketch is the updated version that aims to replace the Snipping tool. However, it is also available on Windows 10. The functionality of Snip & Sketch is more or less the same as the Snipping Tool, but there are some key differences. Snip & Sketch can take hard-to-get screenshots that cannot be taken with the Snipping Tool, e.g. B. Program menu options or icon instructions that only appear when the mouse is moving.

Step 1: Load the picture you want to crop onto the screen.

Step 2: Press Windows + Shift + S keys. The screen should darken and you will see a toolbar at the top, as shown above.

Step 3: Select the rectangular snip tool at the left end and use the mouse to create a box around the image. Here you can crop the image or wait until step 5.

Step 4: When a notification appears and says that the picture is now available on the clipboard, click the notification.

Step 5: When the cropped image shows up in the Snip & Sketch app, edit it as needed using pen, highlighter, pencil, etc. There is also a crop tool if you didn't do it when you took the screenshot.

Step 6: Click the Have Disk button to save the image.

Mac OS

Use the preview app

Apple's Preview app is less of a pain in finding and cropping images stored on your Mac. It's also the default image viewer that provides some editing tools.

Step 1: Right-click the image and choose Open With from the pop-up menu, followed by Preview. If the preview app is still your default viewer, just double-click the file.

Step 2: Use the mouse pointer to draw a box around the part you want to keep.

Step 3: Click Tools in the menu bar and then click Crop in the drop-down menu.

Step 4: In the menu bar click on File and then on Export to save the changes as a copy. Otherwise, select Save to apply the changes to the current photo.

Use the Photos app

Photos is an app for managing and editing photos, which is exclusively available for Apple's MacOS and works similarly to iPhoto, which is no longer available. Like Preview and Photo Booth, the minimalist image software is also pre-installed in the latest iterations of MacOS. This means that anyone using a computer running macOS Yosemite or higher can access the app. With the appropriately titled photos, you can easily group, tag, categorize and crop photos into albums.

Step 1: Open the picture you want to edit. Click the Edit button in the top right. You may be asked at this point to add the image to your library.

Step 2: The Customize, Filter, and Crop tabs appear. Choose Crop.

Step 3: If necessary, click the aspect listed on the right to choose an aspect ratio for the resulting crop. Otherwise, manually adjust the rectangle to fit the part of the image that you want to crop.

Step 3: Click the yellow Done button in the top right corner to complete the process.

Chrome OS

Use the gallery app

Like Windows 10 and MacOS, the Google operating system for Chromebooks also has a standard picture viewer that provides some basic tools.

Step 1: Right-click the image and choose Open with Gallery from the pop-up menu. If Gallery is still your default picture viewer, just double-click it to open it.

Step 2: Click the Crop & Rotate button on the toolbar.

Step 3: The cropping tool is set to Free by default. Use the pointer to move the margins and set the cropping window. Alternatively, you can choose one of the other five options for a specific crop window.

Step 4: Click the blue Done button to close the Crop & Rotate tool.

Step 5: Click the blue Save button or the blue down arrow to select Save As and save the changes as a copy.



Photoshop MacOS Crop Tool

Although Photoshop is not required if all you need to do is crop an image, it remains the most popular photo editing software. Although the premium software is expensive, you can always opt for the free trial version if you want to test out its remarkable features. Photoshop allows you to do the crop in just a few steps.

Step 1: Open the picture you want to edit. Next, select the crop tool on the left toolbar. It resembles a square with several lines protruding from two corners.

Step 2: Adjust your selections to capture the part of the image that you want to keep.

Step 3: When you're done, click the check mark in the options bar at the top of the window as shown above.

Step 4: Choose Save to apply the change to the current picture or Save As to create a new file.

Pixlr (web)

Pixlr is a great image editor for web browsers. With the freemium software, all you have to do is upload an image or enter a url for a photo before cropping the image.

Step 1: download the Main Pixlr website and choose either the Advanced Pixlr E. or the Playful Pixlr X. possibility. Any image editor works efficiently, but the advanced option offers more tools and functions for image manipulation.

Step 2: With the selected tool, select the Open picture Button on the left.

Step 3: Select the photo that you want to upload and crop.
