macOS 11.3 fixes a fatal bug where the Shlayer malware bypasses Apple protections like GateKeeper and File Quarantine.

If you are a Mac user, it is wholeheartedly recommended that you update to Apple's new macOS 11.3 software as soon as possible as it contains an important malware fix.

macOS 11.3 brings another fix for the Shlayer malware

The macOS 11.3 update was released along with iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, and tvOS 14.5.

Apart from a handful of new features and improvements under the hood, it fixes a vulnerability that allowed malware to use a malicious document to bypass the file quarantine, GateKeeper, and other protective measures built into the Mac operating system.

The patch is not confirmed in a support document on the Apple website that describes the security content of the macOS Big Sur 11.3 update. However, Apple has confirmed to TechCrunch that it actually fixed this nasty bug with macOS Big Sur 11.3.

This is extremely important as the enterprise software company Jamf found evidence that this particular vulnerability was being exploited by attackers in the wild.

In addition, Apple sent updated rules to XProtect to prevent malware from exploiting the vulnerability. XProtect is Apple's anti-malware engine built into macOS. In addition, these security patches are also available for users running older macOS versions such as macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave to prevent misuse.
