Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Tremendous vs. AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT: 2020 Replace

For those of you who missed it, we revisited the fight between the $ 400 current-generation GPUs last week: the Radeon RX 5700 XT and the GeForce RTX 2060 Super. Since we both tested at launch almost seven months ago, we've seen new drivers, new games, and game updates, but we've found a very similar situation that can be summarized as a minor performance benefit along the way from the Radeon GPU 1440p games average 8% faster.

Two things were clear in this test: Many of you wanted an update between the 5700 XT and the more expensive RTX 2070 Super, and the inclusion of DLSS results for the games that support the much improved DLSS 2.0. Today we're going to include both things.

Before we start, the RTX 2070 Super is the more expensive GPU from around $ 500, while the 5700 XT is available from $ 400, making the Radeon at least 25% cheaper.

In addition to the 2070 Super, we added the original RTX 2070 to the mix, as many readers requested this. We tested a total of 35 games for this comparison and show you DLSS results for 2060 Super, 2070 and 2070 Super in Control and Wolfenstein: Youngblood.

All tests were performed using our Core i9-9900K GPU test system, which was clocked with 5 GHz and 16 GB DDR4-3400 memory. We cover 1080p and 1440p resolutions, although the focus of the discussion will be on the 1440p data. Let's get to the results …


First, we have Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. This was a clear win for the 5700 XT over the 2060 Super as it offered 22% more frames at 1440p. Surprisingly, the 5700 XT is the superior performer even compared to the RTX 2070 Super, even if it only has a 5% lead. This is a really impressive result for AMD considering how much cheaper the Radeon GPU is.

The 2070 Super can be 7% faster in the Ghost Recon Breakpoint than the 5700 XT with 1440p. However, it is noteworthy that the 1% low performance in the GeForce was significantly better at 16% faster.

The 5700 XT and the RTX 2070 Super are neck to neck in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and deliver an average of 87 fps at 1440p. The original 2070 and 2060 Super are also a match and it seems that the increased clock frequency of the 2060 Super cores does less of this.

Performance was competitive in Gears 5. Here the 5700 XT with 1080p prevailed, while the 2070 Super with 1440p got a narrow lead. This is another title where the Radeon GPU can outperform its weight class.

At Control this is one of the games with DLSS 2.0 support. We will review these results soon. At the moment there is native 1080p and 1440p performance. The 5700 XT just manages to displace the 2060 Super in Control, while the 2070 Super is 14% faster with 1440p. This will not fully justify the 25% price increase, but activating DLSS may help here.

Next up is Metro Exodus, and here the 5700 XT easily beats the 2060 Super. So much so that it can keep up with the 2070 Super. Technically speaking, the Radeon GPU does better in this title with more consistent frame-time performance, for whatever reason, the 2070 Super struggled to improve the 1% low result of the 2070 and 2060 Super default settings.

In Resident Evil 3, the 2070 Super can outperform the 5700 XT at 1440p by 7%. Here the 5700 XT works closer to the 2070 Super than to the 2060 Super, so this remains a good result for AMD.

Nvidia fights a much more convincing fight in Doom Eternal and beats the 5700 XT with the 2070 Super by 21%.

Another game that the 5700 XT could only keep up with the 2060 Super is Fortnite in DX12 mode. Both $ 400 GPUs average 90 fps, while the 2070 Super is 17% faster with an average of just over 100 fps.

PUBG is another game where Radeon's performance is somewhat dubious and slightly below the RTX 2060 Super. The frame rates for the 5700 XT are much worse compared to the GeForce competition in this title, here the RTX 2070 Super is 21% faster.

Borderlands 3 has become an AMD special, similar to Forza Horizon 4 for some time. It is a major outlier in our tests, but the results are correct. The 5700 XT is a whopping 32% faster than the 2060 Super and 13% faster than the 2070 Super. Whatever optimizations were made here, they clearly work.

Finally, we have Battlefield V, where the 5700 XT can reach the 2070 Super with an average of 100 fps at 1440p. This is a great accomplishment of the $ 400 Radeon GPU and excellent frame rates for a title that looks so good at 1440p.

Breakdown of benefits

Overall, you can tell that the GeForce RTX 2070 Super was faster most of the time, but given the price difference, it certainly looked like the Radeon RX 5700 XT would continue to hold its own. The following performance breakdown charts provide the full list of 35 games we tested.

When you look at the full 1080p data first, the Radeon GPU 5700 is 6% slower than the 2070 Super and suffers the biggest losses in the battlefields The Outer Worlds, War Thunder, Vermintide 2, Doom Eternal and PlayerUnknown.

It's also worth noting that in 15 of the 35 games tested, the margin was 5% or less.

When testing at 1440p, the margin is increased by a single percent, making the RTX 2070 about 7% faster than the 5700 XT. This is basically the same latitude that we observed between the two GPUs 7 months ago when we first tested them in a comparative test. There have been some changes to the games used for testing and the margins in some titles have changed, but at the end of the day we have a similar result.

But what if we activated DLSS in Control and Wolfenstein: Youngblood?

DLSS, someone?

If you activate DLSS in Control, you will see massive profits. Note that this is the high quality DLSS mode as we run the highest possible DLSS resolution at 1440p.

The frame rates for the 2070 Super have been improved by 66% and for the 2060 Super by 60%. This means that the 2060 Super is now 48% faster than the 5700 XT, while the 2070 Super is 93% faster.

Given the comparable image quality between 5700 XT and 2070 Super with DLSS, this is a devastating result for the Radeon. The only problem for Nvidia and current RTX owners is that only 4 games currently support DLSS 2.0.

We also tested Wolfenstein: Youngblood and here DLSS has far less impact on performance. This may be because the frame rates were already very high at the beginning. The calculation of DLSS 2.0 still takes some time. This leads to a bottleneck in high-end GPUs or in games that do not require high rendering performance, such as. B. Youngblood.

That doesn't mean we haven't seen an increase in performance. The 2070 Super jumped 17% and since we don't see any noticeable drop in image quality – on closer inspection we would say it's exactly the same – this is a big win for DLSS.

The RTX 2060 Super was slower than the 5700 XT without DLSS, so the GeForce GPU can take the lead in this game with a 15% lead. The 2070 Super is now 37% faster – a convincing win for the green team with DLSS activated.

Taking into account the large DLSS-capable increases at Wolfenstein and Control, the 5700 XT with 1440p is on average 9% slower than the RTX 2070 Super.

Obviously, Nvidia needs to dramatically improve game support so that DLSS can paralyze AMD and have a more significant impact on RTX owners. We're not sure when and if this will happen, but right now it's impressive technology that works well in the few games we've tested.

What we have learned

Nvidia has done a great job of reinventing what DLSS is and how it works. They are undoubtedly far from these awfully blurry initial implementations, so kudos to them. The problem now is game support. We need a lot more of it, but we believe you will only see DLSS support in Nvidia sponsored titles (Nvidia GameWorks). If it does, not enough games will see DLSS support. The fact that AMD's next-generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft provide power isn't an encouraging sign either, but we just have to wait and see.

Looking at today's prices, the GeForce costs 25% more, with most retail cards starting at around $ 520. For the better-equipped models that we fully equip, we could also recommend many 5700 XTs that are around $ 400 MSRP or slightly higher.

In terms of value, the 2070 Super cannot match the values ​​of the Radeon 5700 XT. However, if you prioritize performance, the Nvidia GPU may be a better choice. For those of you who particularly want to play at 4K, it's worth spending the extra $ 100 on the 2070 Super, as the 9% average increase usually leads to a better gaming experience.

Conclusion: While we think the 5700 XT is an obvious choice compared to the 2060 Super with a similar price, the right choice is less obvious compared to the RTX 2070 Super. For most gamers aiming for 1080p or 1440p, the Radeon RX 5700 XT offers the best value. However, if you're looking for maximum performance at 1440p or higher, it may be worth spending a little more on the 2070 Super. In either case, you can't go wrong since both GPUs offer exceptional performance.
