Microsoft is working on a new midrange Surface laptop model for the Google Pixelbook Go, according to Windows Central. The upcoming laptop could start at $ 500 and come with a 12.5-inch display, with an announcement for October.

The entry-level version of this new Surface laptop model with the code name "Sparti" could be equipped with a Core i5 Intel Ice Lake processor of the 10th generation with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage space. The laptop could also come with the locked Windows version Windows 10 in S mode. Alternatively, this new Surface Laptop could also feature Windows 10X, the company's anticipated new operating system.

In terms of the overall design of this laptop, Windows Central reports that Microsoft has made only minor changes to the defaults for a standard Surface laptop. In principle, the new device is designed more like the Surface Go. It keeps the same design ideas as the larger 13- and 15-inch Surface laptops, but comes with a smaller screen and reduced overall footprint to keep it relatively affordable.

In terms of pricing, it is said that this new Surface Laptop model will start at between $ 500 and $ 600. This is considerably cheaper than the starting price of $ 1,000 for the current Surface Laptop 3. It is also far behind the price of the Pixelbook Go, which is in the entry-level range with 8th generation Intel processors, 8 GB of RAM and 64 GB Storage is fitted for $ 650.

This new Surface laptop could also compete with Apple's new 12-inch Macbook. After being discontinued in 2019, the experimental Apple laptop could be reissued this fall with Apple's A14X processor. Prices are around $ 750. Only this new Surface Laptop model is way cheaper than the $ 1,200 MacBook Pro.

Overall, this new Surface laptop for Microsoft would fit well with its overall strategy with Windows 10 devices. Back in May, Microsoft announced that the upcoming Windows 10X operating system was being realigned for single-screen laptops. It was also rumored at the time that the operating system would hit business devices first, with some stripped-down features to put it on a way to compete with Chromebooks and Chrome OS as well.

Such a budget-friendly Surface Laptop would be perfect for Windows 10X. And it could also be one of many other devices that will also hit the market in October for which code names have been leaked. That list includes the Surface Duo 2 (Zeta), possibly a new Surface Pro X (Carina), a Surface Pro 8 (Cayucos), and much more.
