Methods to Again Up a Crostini Linux Set up on Your Chromebook

Are you using Crostini Linux on your Chromebook? This is a great way to secure your Linux installation for future use.

One of the hidden gems of the Chrome OS platform is Crostini, a containerized Linux installation that lets you run all of your favorite Linux tools on a Chromebook. And the best part is that you can install it with just a few clicks.

If you do a lot of work in crostini, you may be wondering how to secure these. Fortunately, it only takes a few steps to back up and restore your Linux installation on a Chromebook device.

Why is a backup important?

There are two types of people in the computing world: those who have had a crash and those who will. The former learned the value of good backup the hard way.

You might be making a configuration change that could prevent the Linux virtual system from starting, or something might physically happen to your Chromebook. While many Chromebooks are cheap enough to be practically thrown away, you still have to spend time installing a Linux environment on the Chromebook from scratch on a new computer.

Keeping good backups and, even better, another device will save you a lot of time in the event of a disaster.

Backing up Crostini Linux on Chromebook

Backing up Linux on a Chromebook is easy. By doing the settings Menu, just go to:

Developers> Linux Development Environment (Beta)> Backup and Restore

click on Backup Click the button and you will be prompted to provide a location for your backup. The generated filename includes the date as it is a good idea to keep multiple backups.

You can store your backup on your local storage, but it's better to use a different drive because the SSDs on Chromebooks are so small and it's good to keep backups off your computer. You can use an SD card, USB stick, or cloud storage.

Choose the location and within minutes you will have a full backup of your Linux system.

Restore your backup

Restoring your backup is easy too. Go to Save and recover Settings and click on the Restore Button. Then navigate in the menu to the backup that you want to restore. Soon you'll be able to pick up where you left off.
