MacOS Mojave: Easy methods to Set up the Free Replace

Apple officially presented MacOS Mojave at WWDC 2018. After several months of beta testing by developers and the public, MacOS Mojave was made available to everyone as a free download and brought new features such as a dark mode, an improved workflow for markups and a continuity camera, new apps, improved privacy when browsing Safari and much more.

Before you begin, make sure your Mac is compatible with Mojave. MacOS Mojave is a free software update for Macs released in mid-2012 or later, and Mac Pro models for 2010 and 2012 with recommended metal-capable graphics cards, according to Apple.

Here is a full list of supported Mac models that can be upgraded to macOS Mojave:

  • Mid 2012 or newer MacBook Pro
  • Mid 2012 or newer MacBook Air
  • 2015 or newer MacBook
  • Late 2012 or newer iMac
  • All iMac Pro models
  • Late 2013 or newer Mac Pro and mid-2010 and mid-2012 models with a metal GPU.
  • Late 2012 or newer Mac Mini

Backup first!

Before we go any further, make sure to back up your files. For anything important that absolutely can't be replaced, be sure to send it to the cloud – Dropbox, iCloud, and OneDrive are great for this – or make a hard copy on a flash drive or external hard drive. Every major version carries the risk of bugs that don't appear until they are widely used. Therefore, securing it is an important first step.

Download and install

Once the important data is backed up on your compatible Mac, you can start downloading and installing Mojave from the Mac App Store. The process may take a while depending on your internet speed and your system will need to be restarted to complete the installation process. Be sure to save the files you may be working on to avoid losing changes.

Step 1:: Start the Mac App Store. You can open the Mac App Store by clicking the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and then selecting App Store. Alternatively, you can click the Mac App Store icon in your Mac's Dock or navigate to your Applications folder.

step 2:: Search for MacOS Mojave in the Mac App Store. You can do this by typing "macOS Mojave" in the search bar on the App Store.

step 3:: Download Mojave by clicking the download button. The software will be downloaded to your applications folder. While the Mojave is downloading, check out some of the new features you are about to experience by checking out our first impressions of the operating system.

Step 4:: The installer will start automatically once the download is complete. Click Next, accept the Terms and Conditions, and follow the on-screen instructions to install and update your Mac to MacOS Mojave.

Step 5:: When the installation program finishes, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Once it's turned back on, you've officially stepped onto the macOS Mojave sand dunes.
