Learn how to Make a Meme

It's safe to say that memes have taken over the internet and are evolving every day. From simple images with little editing to elaborate Photoshopping images, memes come in all shapes and sizes.

Creating your own meme can be intimidating, especially if you are unsure of your computer skills. We created a simple guide to help you create the perfect meme for your family and friends.

Step 1: do your research

Know Your Memes – It's a good idea to look at memes that have already gone viral, especially recent ones. These can serve as inspiration – maybe there is a particular meme topic that is popular right now, for example – or let you know if someone has already tried your idea. The best source to catch up on the latest memes and trends is through Know Your Meme – a website where you can keep track of every meme you come across.

For example, the above image was taken over several times in meme-dom.

Keeping an Eye on Trends – Keeping up with the latest news, pop culture, and other memes can be a great source of inspiration. Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook are great for spotting trends. Entertainment topics are usually an asset. Notice what makes you laugh the most and what gets the most responses.

One recent meme that is making the rounds is the Slaps Roof of Car meme.

Pick a topic that you can identify with. If you're not a sports fan, you may have a hard time selling a sports-themed meme. Cute animals are always great choices when you run out of ideas. However, if you really want to move the envelope, choose a public figure that you can easily imitate. If you want to use a personal experience as the center of your meme, choose one that you can easily identify with.

Decide on Medium – The easiest medium to use is a photo. However, if you can be funny or record something funny on camera, then venture into a video.

Step 2: write your content

Gather Your Materials – Before you proceed, at this point decide whether you want to develop your own stuff or recycle stuff found online. If you want to create a photo meme and use existing content, access the appropriate screens from the videos you want to use. You can also search the internet for pictures that you want to use as pens or check out Imgur's meme generator.

Keep It Short and Simple – Remember that the attention span of a typical internet user is quite short, so you want to make an impression right away. Think of a catchphrase that uses simple and memorable language.

Find the right phrase to convey – make sure your images match the feeling you want to convey.

Step 3: find the tools you need

When creating a photo meme, it may be a good idea to use Photoshop. You can also look up meme generator sites like Imgflip's meme generator which allow you to upload your own photo to use as a background. Lastly, you can install photo apps right on your phone that you can use to add text to your pictures.

Step 4: build it

Once you have your photo – it doesn't matter if you took it, captured it on screen, or found it online – you can use one of the following services.

Imgur Meme Generator (web-based)

When you get to the meme generator, click Upload New Background on the right. Then either drag your pictures into the box at the top of the pop-up window, or paste an image or url into the text box just below the browse button. Once you do, Imgur will automatically upload your image and take you to the creation page.

On your next page you will find a number of options on how to deal with the meme you just created. If you want to save it for later, just right click on the picture and save it on your computer. You can also copy the link to share later. If you don't want to save the image on Imgur, pay attention to the delete link as it will only be displayed once. Otherwise, you can add it to your Imgur account (and create one if you want).

Meme Generator (iOS / Android)

If you're the most creative on the go, consider ZomboDroid's meme generator, which is currently available for both iOS and Android. Download the app and click the photo icon in the upper right corner on iOS and the lower right corner on Android. That way, you can access your own photos, although Meme Generator has tons of visuals to choose from too! Select the photo you want and the app should automatically take you to the next step.

Enter the text you want to appear on your picture at the top and bottom of the meme. Select the desired font size – we recommend sticking to "normal" – and click on "CREATE".

Now use either the floppy disk icon to save your meme to your photo album or the share icon to share it. Here you can copy it to your clipboard or forward it directly to Facebook, Twitter or an email address. It's that easy with Meme Generator!

How about a video meme? While video memes aren't as succinct as memes are, they have a place in the world too. Here are some resources you can rely on to capture, create, and share video memes without knowing how to use expensive, complicated programs like Adobe After Effects and Apple Final Cut Pro.

Instagram

After launching the app, tap the Instagram plus sign in the middle of the bottom menu bar and then tap Video. Press and hold the gray circle to start recording your short video. You have a minute, so use it wisely. When you're done with a clip, let go and you can move on to another shot. If you don't like the last clip, tap Delete at the bottom of the screen.

Remember, you can only delete the latest clip. So don't move on to your next shot until you're 100 percent satisfied with the results.

Keep clicking "Next" until your video appears in your Instagram feed. Then you know your Instagram video meme is working!

Snapchat

Snapchat has become a popular solution for sharing short videos with friends over the past few years. After you've launched the app and captured your subject, you'll want to press and hold the large circle to start the capture process.

Snapchat meme screenshotYou can record videos with no time limit and all at once (no clips like on Instagram). Once that's done, you can add all kinds of emoji, text, and effects to your video to make it pop – just like taking a picture.

You can also save a clip: after recording your clip, look for the down arrow icon in the lower left corner of the screen. We encourage you to share your story through your friends. This way, anyone who follows your snaps can see your artwork for up to 24 hours after it was taken. However, if you save your video, you can post it anywhere else in the world, including Reddit, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.

Youtube

While not as simple as the solutions above, you can easily make a video meme by recording yourself Youtube via webcam. If you're signed in to YouTube with your Google Account, click the video camera icon in the top right corner of the screen. Next, you need to click "Go Live," which shouldn't be hard to see on the screen. On the next page, you may need to complete the account verification (it's a simple process) and give your computer permission to activate the camera and microphone before you can proceed. At this point, you'll need to fill out a short form with the details of your live video so that the right audience can find you. Once you've done this, you're ready to start streaming. However, since it's live, keep in mind that if you make a mistake, you cannot start over.

Of course, when you go live you are also giving access to your content to the internet population. In the long run, something you do, a face you make, or a phrase you say could become material even for others to make memes of you – a totally unplanned outcome of life.

Step 5: share it!

Is a meme really a real meme if you don't share it? Online exposure is the final step in truly creating a meme. Share it on your favorite social media pages to get the most of the experience, from Twitter to Facebook and everywhere in between.
