Apple completely redesigned its desktop Mac for the first time in nearly a decade.
Apple has unveiled its first redesign of its desktop all-in-one iMac – and it's a sucker. Announced at Apple's Spring Loaded event on April 20th, this is the first iMac to feature Apple's fast M1 chip and a host of other useful new features.
Unlike the previous iMacs, the new M1 version is only available in one screen size: 24 inches. That puts it in the middle of the 21.5-inch and 27-inch models that Apple previously made. It is reminiscent of Apple's decision with the first M1 MacBook Pro, which is currently only available in a 13-inch model.
Presumably this could change in the future as more models are added. The new iMac screen is a 4.5K retina display with 11.3 million pixels, 500 nits of brightness and more than a billion colors.
The iMac redesign you've been waiting for
The monitor comes in a housing with a thickness of only 11.5 millimeters and features slimmed-down bezels – although the trademark of the chin is retained. The most noticeable part of the visual redesign is the choice of colors. For the first time in several decades, the iMac is available in a variety of colors. There are seven colors to choose from including green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue and silver.
Other improvements include improved microphones, a six-speaker sound system, and a 1080p FaceTime HD camera. Another new feature on the iMac is a Touch ID fingerprint scanner, which can be used to switch user profiles, secure logins and purchase goods with Apple Pay. Finally – for fans of the MagSafe connector slated to return to the MacBook after a few years in the wilderness – there's a "beautifully woven" power connector that attaches magnetically to the back of the iMac.
"The M1 is a giant leap forward for the Mac, and we're excited to announce today the brand new iMac, the first Mac designed for the groundbreaking M1 chip," said Greg Joswiak, senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Apple, in one statement. "With its eye-catching design in seven stunning colors, its impressive 4.5K retina display, the best camera, microphones and speakers ever in a Mac and Touch ID, combined with the amazing performance of M1 and the performance of macOS Big Sur The new iMac takes everything people love about iMacs to a whole new level. "

While details like the design and color options were revealed in advance, the iMac was nonetheless one of the highlights of Apple's first special event in 2021. Exactly an hour away, that event was as packed with new products as its Spring Loaded name implied.
The new iMac is available for pre-order on Friday April 30th. The computers will then be delivered to customers in the second half of May.
Apple introduces M1: the "fastest CPU core in the world"
