How one can Flip Off Siri on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch

If you're not using Siri on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch, turn it off. There is a quick and easy way to do this. While Siri is a great virtual assistant and can find and retrieve many types of information, it is not for everyone.

You can turn off Siri on your Apple devices so you or someone else cannot accidentally open it. You can also delete all of your Apple-stored voice data from your Siri command requests.

You will no longer be able to use Siri if it is disabled. However, you can always reactivate it to use it again. We'll show you how.

How to turn off Siri on an iPhone or iPad

You can both turn off Siri and delete all of your Siri voice recordings from Apple servers by using the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

1. Turn off Siri on an iPhone or iPad

If you want to prevent Siri from working at all, here's how you can do it:

  1. Open that the settings App on your device.

  2. Scroll down and tap Siri & Search.

  3. Flip the switch Press the side button for Siri out. If you have an iPhone with a home button this will be called Press Home for Siri instead.

  4. Also deactivate next Quit "Hey Siri".

  5. A prompt will appear on your screen. Tap the Turn off Siri Option in that prompt and Siri will be completely disabled.

  6. Also deactivate Allow Siri when it's locked if you want.

You can no longer trigger Apple's virtual assistant on your iOS device. However, if you just want to turn off any of these options, you can do so without disabling Siri entirely. There are more options on this page that you can turn off without turning Siri off completely.

2. Remove your voice data from Apple servers

Apple will record what you tell Siri along the way and store it on corporate servers. Since you're turning off Siri completely, you may also want to remove your Siri recordings from Apple's possession.

Starting with iOS and iPadOS 13.2, you can delete Siri recordings by going to Settings> Siri & Search> Siri & Dictionary History and tap Clear Siri & dictation history.

However, if you are using an older version of iOS or iPadOS, you will need to turn off dictation on your device to destroy your Siri recordings. You can do this as follows:

  1. Start the the settings App on your iPhone or iPad and go to General> Keyboard.

  2. Scroll all the way down and you will find an option that says Activate dictation. Turn this option off by tapping on it.

  3. Tap Switch off dictation in the command prompt on your screen.

Dictation should be disabled, which will remove your voice data from Apple servers.

How to turn off Siri on a Mac

Siri is much less useful on a Mac because you have a full keyboard and mouse to control it. Your best bet is to turn off features that you don't use on your computer and you can both turn off Siri and delete your Siri recordings from Apple servers on your Mac.

1. Turn off Siri on a Mac

As with iOS, to disable Siri, you'll need to open the Settings panel on your Mac:

  1. Click the Apple logo in the upper left and select System settings.

  2. Choose Siri on the resulting screen.

  3. You should see a check box labeled Activate Ask Siri. Uncheck that box and Siri will be disabled on your Mac.

2. Remove your voice data from Apple servers

After Siri is disabled on your Mac, you'll want to remove your Siri voice recordings from Apple servers.

If you're using a Mac running macOS Catalina 10.15.1 or later, you are good to go System Preferences> Siri and click on Clear Siri & dictation history to remove your recordings.

If you're using an older version of macOS, do the following to turn off dictation and remove your Siri history from Apple servers:

  1. click keyboard on the System settings Panel.

  2. Select the last tab that says dictation.

  3. Choose out for the dictation Option to disable the feature on your Mac.

How to turn off Siri on an Apple Watch

You can turn off Siri on your Apple Watch using the Watch app on your iPhone or the watch itself.

On the Apple Watch, go to Settings> Sirideactivate Quit "Hey Siri", Rise to speak, Press Digital Crownand tap Turn off Siri in the command prompt.

To do this, open the from your iPhone Clock App, go to Settings> Siriand turn off Quit "Hey Siri", Rise to speak, Press Digital Crownand select Turn off Siri in the command prompt.

You can turn off dictation on your watch by going to Settings> General> Dictation and turn off dictation Switch.

Here's how to turn off Siri when setting up a new device

When you set up a new Apple device, your device will ask you to set up Siri at a specific time. If you don't want to use Siri on this new device, it's best to turn it off from the start.

When prompted to configure Siri, just choose Set up Siri later. This way, the virtual assistant remains disabled.

Here's how to turn Siri back on

If you ever want to bring Siri back to your devices, you can do so by going to the control panels described above where you disabled Siri. From there, check the option to turn on Siri and you'll be able to use the feature again.

As mentioned earlier, Siri is a convenient way to find information and get content. However, not everyone likes it. If you prefer or don't need a different virtual assistant, you can use the methods above to remove Siri from your Apple devices.
