How one can Cut up One Home windows PC Between Two Individuals With Multiseat Software program

Let's say you have a decent PC at home. You want two people to use a PC at the same time, so it is not enough to just create two user profiles on the same PC. At first, the only solution seems to be to get a second PC.

But what if you can turn your single high-end PC into two mid-range computers? This can save you money by using multiseat software so that two people can use one computer at the same time.

What is a multi-seat configuration?

When computers were a new invention, just getting a CPU was prohibitive. These machines used to cost a lot more than a car; As a result, companies and universities have had to share a computer for multiple users through a multi-user configuration.

Multiple monitors, keyboards, mice, and speakers can be connected to a computer. A multiseat app then assigns each of these peripheral devices to a unique user so that different people can use the computer at the same time.

However, the introduction of the personal computer resulted in a drop in prices so that it was possible to buy a computer for every user. Even so, multi-user computers still have a place in modern society.

For example, if you need multiple terminals for simple tasks – like database access or surfing the Internet for a public library – it is more cost effective to have a high-performance multi-user device than multiple low-end CPUs.

What are the hardware requirements for multiseat apps?

If you plan to set up your own multi-user computer, you must have at least one monitor, mouse, keyboard and audio output per user. You can connect the mice, keyboards, and speakers to your computer via USB, and if you need more USB ports, you can use self-powered USB hubs to connect those devices.

Most modern monitors, however, require dedicated VGA, HDMI, or display port slots. If you're using a computer with a built-in GPU, you'll need to check how many monitor-out slots the motherboard has. If it only has one port, you'll need to install a dedicated graphics card that allows you to connect more than one display.

In addition, you should not use a laptop to set up a multi-user computer. That's because the small form factor and limited ports can cause connectivity issues and cooling issues. Additionally, laptops typically aren't as powerful as their similarly-equipped desktop cousins.

The advantage of multi-user computers

The main benefit of a CPU with a multiseat configuration is savings, especially if you already have a powerful PC. If you have a desktop CPU at home and both kids need their own device, you can split that single desktop into two computers by simply downloading a multiseat app and buying a cheap keyboard, mouse, speakers, and monitor.

It's even cheaper than buying a used desktop computer because you don't have to buy the CPU. You also save on power consumption since you only supply a single processor with power. And if you only have one user, you can enjoy the maximum performance of the CPU.

Another benefit is that you can save money on upgrades because you only have one desktop computer. With some apps, you can also save on software licensing because you don't have to buy multiple licenses because the app is installed on the same computer.

When to buy another computer instead

While multi-seat configurations have some advantages, they also have some disadvantages. For example, if the central computer fails, none of the users can use a computer. So if you are setting this up for important office work, or if your kids are in high school and need access to their schoolwork all the time, then you should reconsider.

And if your prospective users need mobility rather than computing power, consider getting multiple Chromebooks instead.

How to build a multiseat PC

Now that you've added the peripherals you need for all users, the next step is to install a multiseat app. You can use a dedicated multiseat app like ibik ASTER or a virtualization engine like the VMWare Workstation Player.

Multiseat apps are generally easier to set up and use. Once installed, it will automatically detect every monitor connected to your computer and then create a custom desktop for display. When you turn on your computer, it starts automatically so users can use their assigned computer without any additional setup.

The main disadvantage of this option is that it is not available for free for personal use. You can test the ASTER app for a month, but you have to pay afterwards.

On the other hand, VMWare Workstation Player is not easy to set up and requires additional licenses for each software you install per user. It also consumes more computing power compared to dedicated multi-user apps.

It's free for personal use, however, so you don't have to just spend money to get it working. It is also useful for other applications, e.g. B. for running multiple operating systems on one computer. So if one of the users needs Linux while the other user needs Windows, you can go for this solution instead.

Two computers for the price of one

If you already have a decently powerful computer and need two devices for general use, e.g. For things like surfing the web and general productivity, you don't need to spend a lot of money on a new computer.

Instead, get a used monitor, cheap keyboard and mouse combo, and USB speaker, then install a multiseat app. This allows you to have two users (such as your children, or perhaps your retired mother and father) use the computer at the same time.

And if you are concerned that two people will lose their data if their computer breaks, you can sign up for cloud storage so you can have online backups. Also, most modern computers are tough enough to withstand years of use without breaking.

However, if you want to use this setup for productivity, e.g. After all, the savings you get with a multiseat computer aren't worth the hassle when you have two unproductive colleagues due to a defective CPU.
