How Does It Evaluate to the Outdated Legacy Model?

Microsoft Edge has been around since Windows 10 launched in 2015, but it hasn't worked as Microsoft hoped. For this reason, Microsoft Edge rebuilt in 2020. It has a fresh logo and other technology under the hood.

But is it worth trying the new Edge? Let us see what the revised version of Microsoft Edge has to offer and how it is compared to the legacy version.

What's up with the new Microsoft Edge?

From 2020, "Microsoft Edge" refers to a brand new browser. Microsoft calls the old "Edge Legacy" and will not actively support it.

The biggest difference to the new version of Microsoft Edge is that it is based on Chromium. If you're not familiar, Chromium is an open source browser project from Google. It serves as the backbone of Google Chrome, but can also be customized and used by anyone for free.

As it turns out, many browsers run on Chromium. Opera and Vivaldi are examples of other popular Chromium-based browsers

in the Microsoft browser – see below for some restrictions. Since the original version of Edge contained a poor collection of extensions, this is welcome news.

In particular, Edge is now using the Blink rendering engine, which is open source. Microsoft's proprietary EdgeHTML engine was used in the old version. This means that all popular browsers now use open source engines.

Another important improvement is that Edge, like Chrome, is now updated regularly. This is much better than the old scheme where Edge only gets updates from major Windows updates a few times a year.

Microsoft claims to have chosen this path for better compatibility with users and web developers.

How do I get the new Edge browser?

You can now download the new Microsoft Edge. It's available for Windows 10, of course, but Microsoft has also made it available for Windows 8.1, Windows 7, MacOS, Android, and iOS. The company plans to bring it to Linux in the future.

If you don't install it manually, the browser may be deployed through Windows Update. For this you need the update from May 2019 or higher. Therefore, make sure that you have updated your copy of Windows 10 if you are running an old version. The new Edge should also be included in the May 2020 update for Windows 10.

If you install the browser on Windows 10, the older version of Edge will be replaced. Do not worry; Windows 10 still includes Internet Explorer for compatibility reasons. The new Edge has a blue and green wavy logo instead of the old blue “e”, which is similar to the Internet Explorer logo.

If you are looking into Microsoft Edge for the first time, you will definitely notice the similarities to Google Chrome if you are familiar with this browser. Most elements of the user interface such as navigation bar, tabs, task manager and three-point menu are almost identical to those in Chrome.

Of course, Edge is replacing Google’s Chrome services with similar Microsoft services. The Synchronize The icon in the top right synchronizes your data across Edge installations with your Microsoft account instead of your Google account.

Most of them the settings are the same as Chrome. The main difference is that Data protection and services Tab: You can choose from basic, Balanced, and Strict Levels of tracker prevention.

The Collections Function that looks like a series of photos next to that Favorites Asterisk, is a remarkable difference to Chrome. With a collection, you can collect links, images, and other web content in one place. It's handy to create a wish list or Pinterest-like collection of items that are more flexible than bookmarks.

To try them out, click Start a new collection in the panel and give it a name. Now you can click on with the collection page open Add current page, drag any link or drag an image to save it. There is also a Attached note Button for text bits.

Press the Three-point button In the collection window you will find some options, including exporting your collection to Word, Excel or opening all of them in a new window.

Use Chrome extensions in Edge

Go to the Microsoft Edge Add-Ons page to browse the list of official extensions. It includes popular options like Dark Reader and Grammar, but you probably won't find your favorite Chrome niche extensions there.

Fortunately, the new Edge is compatible with Chrome extensions. To activate it, open the Three-point menu Click Edge on the top right Extensions. Activate the option at the bottom left Allow extensions from other stores Slider and accept the warning.

Now you can visit the Chrome Web Store and install extensions from there. Some may not work properly in Edge. Therefore, test them after installation.

Should You Use Microsoft Edge Now?

Using the redesigned Microsoft Edge doesn't offer much more. If you're familiar with Chrome, Edge is very similar, except for the layout of the settings menu and some options. So should you give it a try?

If for some reason you are not happy with your current browser or just want to try something different, it's worth a look. The new Edge doesn't offer much of an improvement over Chrome, but depending on your preferences, this could be perfect. You may want a reliable and flexible browser that is not tied to Google – as long as you don't mind Microsoft integration.

It's much more appealing than the old version of Edge, which really didn't offer any good reasons to use it. Although there was an e-book reader and annotation functions, these are not exactly game changers. The new Edge also offers better synchronization options as it is available on all platforms.

Regardless of whether you use Microsoft Edge, this new setup is beneficial for almost everyone. People who can't install a new browser will get a much better experience with the preinstalled option, and hopefully Chrome will improve over the more direct competition.
