How to choose a PC
There are a few important things to determine: First, set a budget. This can of course be flexible, but you don't want to get carried away and spend too much. Keep in mind that you will still need some cash to buy a monitor, speakers or headphones, or both, and possibly an upgraded accessory if you want something better than the wired mouse and keyboard that most desktop towers come with .
Second, get an idea of the type of PC you need – maybe even write down a list of must-have and optional features – so you don't end up with a computer that doesn't fit your work and lifestyle. Do you need a gaming PC with a dedicated graphics card and increased RAM, or is a relatively simple workstation good enough? Would you like to do without the PC tower entirely and instead opt for an all-in-one PC? Get an idea of what you want in good time.
Hardware is of course the most important thing to consider when shopping for these Prime Day PC deals. As mentioned earlier, last generation products are often the most discounted as retailers use sales like this to run down old inventory but don't get stuck on something that's too long by 2020. This is especially important if you need a computer for high-performance tasks such as gaming or rendering video.
Any good modern computer should have a ninth or tenth generation Intel Core or AMD Ryzen CPU, at least 8 GB of DDR4 RAM, and a solid-state drive (we generally recommend 256 GB or more). However, if you're on the go on super-cheap, an eighth-gen Core CPU, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of SSD aren't terrible specs for a budget workstation, but you'll wish you had more juice if you're multitasking frequently performed or performed resource-intensive tasks such as video editing. In the under $ 500 category, you can easily find PCs with Ryzen CPUs and 8GB of RAM that are well above their weight.
One final consideration concerns your graphics card, which is a necessity especially for gaming PCs. Again, they shouldn't be too cheap. There are still computers out there with the old Nvidia 10 series cards that we don't recommend. Stick with the newer Nvidia GeForce GTX 16 and RTX 20 series cards (or the new 30 series if you can find a deal that early) and the AMD Radeon RX 500 and 5000 cards. There are plenty of budget-friendly deals out there with modern GPUs, can handle 1080p games with good settings.
