How to limit data usage using third party tools

Windows 10 has some helpful features that let you set a bandwidth limit and use less data. However, you may need something more advanced. In this case, these third-party tools are a good choice.

1. NetBalancer

NetBalancer shows you a list of all active processes on your system and the associated network usage. Below is a live graph so you can see at a glance where bandwidth peaks are occurring. Move the mouse over the diagram and you can see which processes were consuming your bandwidth at that time.

To limit the bandwidth of a program, see the list and Double click it. You can use the … Download priority and Upload priority Dropdowns to customize usage based on preset filters. This is useful if, for example, you want to keep one program from being restricted, but have other programs use bandwidth first when they need it. Alternatively, choose Custom from the drop down list to define your own limits.


You can also do the same in the main window using the green and red arrow icons at the top of the window. A handy feature is clicking the red right arrow with a vertical line that blocks all network traffic. Advanced users can use the filters and rules.

2. NetLimiter
