Updated: Crysis 2 performance review of the final version of the game
25 graphics cards + CPUs tested
This year seems to be full of highly anticipated titles to hit the PC. Crysis 2 is undoubtedly one of those games, and one that lived on our minds, considering the original game (2007) can still crawl a medium-range machine to this day.
As much as we admire developers' efforts to bring newly released games to the majority of PC gamers, Crytek's drive to expand the graphics envelope was confirmed last year when they claimed Crysis 2 would have "the best graphics out there You have ever seen ". Soon after we learned that Crysis 2 would be graphically superior to its console counterparts on PC, this was good news as we feared that Crytek might not be loyal to its PC fans.
Crysis 2 is slated to be released on March 22nd. However, as it is well known, an early incomplete build of the game was released on torrent websites last week. Before we start, let's get a few things straight:
1) Our tests are based on the leaked, unfinished build of Crysis 2. With this article we aim to provide an early look at the game's GPU and general system requirements. Of course, we were excited to see how the game would run on certain hardware as the original title was challenging.
2) We don't think this leak can be called the definitive representation of the game that will ship next month. It is obvious that further tweaks will be made if we run into bugs and need to repeat some tricks to bypass crashes on the desktop.
3) Since we played the original Far Cry, we've become huge fans and supporters of Crytek's work. We encourage all readers who wanted to buy the game to hold back and wait for the finished version rather than spoiling what is sure to be one of the best games of 2011.
With this in mind, and taking into account the fact that this "beta" version of the game is still missing a lot of features, we ran a short series of tests comparing AMD and Nvidia graphics cards. We expect Crysis 2's performance will vary from now until the game is released. Please only accept this article as a rough guide.
