Widgets were an important part of Apple's new software offerings last year. Now it is working on improving it further.
App widgets were a key part of Apple's strategy for Mac, iOS, and iPadOS when the latest major updates were unveiled in late 2020.
Widgets refer to small apps that update in the background and can be used to provide at-a-glance information about everything from weather to device usage statistics to task lists.
While Apple went into full swing with widgets as part of iOS 14, iPadOS 14 and macOS Big Sur, the developers want them to help with further improvements.
According to 9to5Mac, Apple has invited Apple developers to attend a special online event that will take place on February 1, 2021. Under the title "Building Great Widget Experiences," iOS, iPadOS and MacOS app developers can take part with Apple's engineers and designers to learn more about building insanely great widgets.
As with all Apple events since WWDC last year, creating great widget experiences will take place entirely online rather than inviting a select group of developers to visit the Apple campus as in the past. This is due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
The invitation to the event is partially:
"We want you to join us on Monday February 1st, 2021 for a great widget experience. This event will be held online. Useful and delightful widgets let you highlight and display important content in your app, where users can see them at a glance on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. You can also help users personalize their home screens in unique ways. Join us for an in-depth look at creating great widget experiences. "
The invitation sent to anyone with an Apple Developer account indicates that the event will give developers the opportunity to ask questions. This sounds similar to the Q&A sessions Apple offers every year as part of WWDC.
As 9to5Mac notes, Apple has already organized events like this one. Two, held in 2020, focused on transitioning to Apple Silicon with the first M1 Macs and integrating accessibility features into apps.
It is highly unlikely that Apple will announce its future plans for widgets during the February event. However, this suggests that widgets are likely to remain a big focus of Apple's future.
Long a sought-after addition to Apple software, Cupertino company certainly seems to have been listening – and now it wants to listen to its developers too.
