Apple has officially announced its first special event for 2021.
Apple's next special event, titled "Spring Loaded," is on Tuesday, April 20 at 1:00 pm. ET / 10 a.m. PDT. The event, which Apple fans saw with eagle eyes, was revealed by Siri ahead of Apple's official announcement. It's the Cupertino company's first special event of the year.
As with all Apple events since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Spring Loaded will be a virtual event that will only take place online and will not see any visitors live at the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park.
With Apple already announced that the June WWDC event will only be virtual, it's no surprise to hear that Apple would stick to the online format for the April event.
What Apple could announce with "Spring Loaded"
As usual, Apple has not announced what it will reveal at the event. (An early announcement would be extremely counterproductive from a marketing point of view.)
A new iPad Pro with an improved display for the larger model and Apple's accessories for item tracking, the AirTags, may be expected at the event. It's also possible that there will be a new Apple Pencil, iPad mini, new AirPods, an upgraded Apple TV, and possibly even the much-anticipated M-series Apple iMac chip design.
While it is highly unlikely that all of these devices will appear at the event, they are devices or Apple devices that are currently expected on the Cupertino roadmap. (Hey, with the word "Loaded" in the event title, it suggests that this could be a crowded Apple event!)
The only possible clue was a short video that Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of global marketing, shared on Twitter. It shows graphical elements overlying the video of the Apple Park exterior. While this may be a stretch, it could point to Apple's ambitions for augmented reality (AR) – although reports of Apple AR glasses are still a long way off, according to all data.
Apple hosting an event in April is rare. You would have to go through the history books through 2010 to find another April event. At the previous event in April, Apple demonstrated iOS 4 and a new software developer kit for iPhone and iPod touch users.
Not long to find out
Ultimately, it doesn't take long to find out what Apple has planned for Spring Loaded. As always, the event can be viewed on the Apple website, YouTube and Apple TV.
Also, there will be plenty of post-show analysis here on this website to highlight the importance of what Apple is announcing.
