In 2021, Amazon released a major update to its 10-inch Fire tablet and an updated Fire HD 10 Plus model for those who want additional features – at a higher price, of course. Interested buyers looking for a new tablet should know exactly how the two models compare and what the main differences are. We took a close look at it and our guide is equipped with everything you need. Here you can find out how the Fire tablets stack and which ones we recommend.

Performance, battery life and charging
The Fire HD 10 offers a significant upgrade with an octa-core processor that now has 3GB of RAM, resulting in a significant and welcome increase in speed. However, the HD 10 Plus goes one step further with 4 GB of RAM. This is an impressive spec for a 10-inch tablet that offers even faster speeds.
When it comes to batteries, however, the two models are the same, offering around 12 hours of mixed activities like surfing the internet, reading, listening to music, etc. Your personal results will vary, but there are no specific differences between either battery.
Charging is a different story, however. The Fire HD 10 Plus comes with wireless charging capabilities, and Amazon even offers a package with a wireless charger. While the plus is a bit big for some wireless chargers, it's a handy feature that means you don't have to rely on a cable charger again. The HD 10 model does not offer such an option.
Winner: Fire HD 10 Plus
Design, display and durability
If you've used any of the previous Fire HD 10 models, you will be very familiar with the new version with its 10.1-inch HD touchscreen, 16.5-ounce weight, and general portability – it is a medium sized tablet designed for use in landscape orientation. The HD 10 Plus is the same in terms of size, but has a significant upgrade: it has a "soft touch" end that feels more comfortable on your fingers.
The displays themselves are identical on both models, so there isn't much to talk about there. However, when upgrading, keep in mind that the screen is about 10% brighter than previous models.
Also note that the HD 10 model comes in a variety of colors, but somewhat puzzlingly, the HD 10 plus is only available in Slate. It's not really a deal breaker, but if you go for the plus, you don't get any color options.
Winner: Fire HD 10 Plus
When you want to use your tablet camera, both Fire HD tablets have a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera to work with. There's no difference here, and it probably won't make our list of the best camera phones either.
Software and updates
All Amazon Fire tablets run Fire OS, Amazon's customized version of Android, and can respond to Alexa voice commands. The platform is largely based on the Amazon Appstore. There is currently no access to other app stores from different platforms. So this is a bit of a limiting factor. Despite this shortcoming, it's still easy and intuitive to use, so users of either tablet won't have much to complain about.
The HD 10 and 10 Plus continue the tradition of giving Prime members free access to media such as shows, films, books and music on their tablets. Essentially, you need to be an Amazon Prime member to take advantage of the service. Fortunately, this is unlikely to be a problem for interested buyers.
Fire OS ultimately stays the same for both models, so there isn't much of a difference to discuss here.
Amazon offers a case, screen protector, and charger option for the Fire HD 10. However, these can also be purchased separately on request. The case is a worthwhile purchase and allows you to prop up the tablet for easier viewing. Note that traditionally there is also a children's version of the Fire HD 10 (2021).
The HD 10 Plus comes with a wireless charging base, but you will need to purchase other accessories separately. Again, the Plus shows that it is compatible with wireless chargers, and the wireless charging station is a well-designed technology that can also serve as a stand if needed.
Winner: Fire HD 10 Plus
Price and availability
The Fire HD 10 and HD 10 Plus will both be available on May 26th. The pre-orders are opened about a month in advance. You can buy themfor $ 150 and the for $ 180.
Overall winner: Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus
For an additional $ 30, the Fire HD 10 Plus has a sleek new finish, more RAM for better speeds and assistance with wireless charging, and the option to bundle your own unique wireless charger and stand. This is a significant upgrade for only $ 30. This is an easy recommendation for just about any buyer. However, if you're looking to save the $ 30 – and that's not an unfair question in this price range – there is no shame in buying the Fire HD 10. However, if you can save the extra cash, the Fire HD 10 Plus is absolutely worth it.
