With so many different factors to consider when purchasing a laptop, finding the right one can be a daunting task. Portability and battery life are the current trends, along with the value that has caused the recent surge in netbooks, of course. As I said – and I still stand by the statement – netbooks are great for simple tasks, but they lack the ability to be more than an addition to a real notebook or desktop system.
Today we're going to take a look at the Acer Timeline 4810T notebook, a 14-inch ultra-portable designed to bridge the gap between low-powered netbooks and bulky notebooks while maintaining the battery life of the latest generation of netbooks. The timeline has an incredible lifespan of over eight hours.
Acer's Timeline series includes four different notebook sizes: 13.3, 14 and 15.6 inches were the standard versions that were launched earlier this year. Most recently, a smaller 11.6-inch version was also introduced during the Windows 7 launch week, with some variants such as CPU speed, hard drive capacity and optical drive option. We'd like to state here that many of our impressions in this review apply to other timeline models, despite the obvious size implications.
The Timeline 4810T we're reviewing today sits in the middle of the package with its 14-inch, widescreen, backlit LED display and a resolution of 1366 x 768. The 4810T is powered by an Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500 processor with 1.4 GHz, 4 GB DDR3 memory (expandable to 8 GB), a 320 GB hard drive, an Intel GS45 chipset with integrated 4500MHD graphics and Intel Wi-Fi Fi Link 5100 supports which Draft supports. N connectivity.
Acer will try to meet the 8-hour requirement with a 6-cell battery in the 4810T. Further standard functions for this 14-inch laptop are an optical 8-way SuperMulti drive, an integrated webcam and a multi-card reader. The timeline specs shy away from just a casual mobile gaming system due to the built-in graphics, but at $ 550 and £ 4.2 I have a hard time complaining.
We'll examine the 4810T timeline in more detail next.
