The UEFI BIOS is a special software program that connects your computer's firmware to the operating system. It is the first program that runs when you turn on your PC. It checks which hardware components your PC has, wakes the components up and transfers them to the operating system.
When you enter the UEFI BIOS menu, you may find that you cannot access the UEFI firmware settings. This could prevent you from fixing several system problems. If these settings are missing from your PC, we'll show you how to restore them.
Why are the UEFI firmware settings missing?
Depending on the manufacturer of your PC, you can access the UEFI BIOS settings in different ways. If you can't find the UEFI firmware settings in the BIOS menu, there are a few common reasons for this problem:
Your PC's motherboard does not support UEFI.
The quick start function disables access to the UEFI firmware settings menu.
Windows 10 was installed in legacy mode.
Here are some solutions you can try.
1. Make sure your PC is equipped with UEFI
Before trying any other possible solution, you need to check that your PC's motherboard is equipped to support UEFI. If your PC is an older model, the UEFI firmware settings may not be available.
To check your PC's BIOS mode:
Press the Windows key + R. to open the Run Command dialog box.
Art msinfo32 and press Enter to open the System Information screen.
Choose System summary on the left.
Scroll down in the right pane and look for the BIOS mode Possibility. Its worth should be either UEFI or heritage. If it heritageThen your PC cannot access the UEFI firmware settings.
2. Bypass the quick start function
The quick start function allows you to start your PC quickly. Enabling this feature can reduce the delay in loading some UEFI BIOS menu options. Because of this, you may not be able to access the UEFI firmware settings. Bypassing this feature can help resolve your problem.
First open the Windows start menu and choose the power Symbol.
Hold that shift Button and then select Shut down from the energy options. This bypasses the quick start of Windows 10 and shuts down your PC completely.
Turn your computer back on and press the appropriate BIOS setup key.
If this fixes your problem, you can turn off the quick launch feature to make the UEFI firmware settings available at all times. Note, however, that this means slightly longer start times.
3. Create a desktop shortcut for Boot-to-UEFI firmware settings
Another way to fix this problem is to create a desktop shortcut that forces your PC to boot directly from the UEFI Firmware Settings menu.
Here's how you can do it:
Right-click an empty space on your desktop and choose Newand then select abbreviation.
On the next screen, enter the following Shutdown / r / fw and click on Next Button.
Choose an appropriate name for the shortcut, then click Finished.
Right click the shortcut and select the properties Option, and then choose the Advanced Button.
On the next screen, check the Execute as administrator Box and hit OK.
Choose Apply> OK apply these changes.
Double click on it to use the shortcut. Your PC should restart directly in the UEFI firmware settings menu.
4. Change the BIOS from Legacy to UEFI by converting MBR Disk to GPT Disk
Depending on the age and the technical specifications of your PC, either a Master Boot Record (MBR) or a GUID Partition Table (GPT) disk is used. Even if your motherboard is equipped with UEFI capabilities, you will not be able to access the UEFI firmware settings if your drive is equipped with the MBR hard drive. In this case, you need to switch the BIOS from legacy to UEFI by converting the MBR disk to a GPT disk.
When converting a system disk, it is best to create a system image to back up your system. We We recommend Create a system backup as data may be lost during this process.
If you already know your partition is MBR type and your system can boot from UEFI, you are ready. You can convert your drive to GPT format.
Otherwise, you can check here whether your PC is equipped with the MBR or GPT hard drive.
Press the Windows key + R. to open the Run Command dialog box.
Art diskmgmt.msc and click on Enter to open the Disk Management window.
Right click on Disk 0 (or the hard drive that contains the Windows installation) and select properties.
By doing properties Click on the screen Volumes Tab. Search for Partition style Option under Hard drive information.
When the partition style is GUID partition table (GPT)Then you don't need to continue the conversion.
5. Disable the CMOS settings to restore the default BIOS settings
As a last resort, you can reset the CMOS settings from your PC's motherboard. This will allow you to restore your computer's BIOS settings to their defaults.
Here's how to get started.
Turn off your computer and unplug the power cord from the wall socket.
Remove the bottom cover of your PC. From here, look for the CMOS battery and jumpers on the motherboard.
To easily find the CMOS jumpers, look for a "CLR CMOSReading on the motherboard.
You will usually find three pins where the CMOS jumpers are located. The jumpers are only on two of these pins. When they're on the first and second pins, move them to the second and third pins. If your motherboard only has two pins, the jumpers will likely be attached to one pin. If so, plug them into both pins.
Next, remove the CMOS battery from its slot. Wait about 15 seconds and then put it back on.
Move the CMOS jumpers back to their original pins.
Replace the computer cover, plug in your computer, and turn it on.
On more advanced motherboards, you'll find a dedicated button to reset CMOS settings. This is done with "CMOS, ""CMOS_SW, "or something similar. You can reset the CMOS settings by pressing and holding this button for a few seconds.
If you are having trouble locating hardware components on your PC, refer to your motherboard's manual for assistance. Alternatively, you can check your motherboard type and learn more about it online.
