While VR headsets need a fairly sturdy GPU to work properly, they're not completely tied to a desktop computer. With the right laptop, you can run VR with ease, making it easier for you to find the perfect VR setup for your home or on the go.
Virtual headsets like the Vive Cosmos or the Rift S have their own recommendations on how much computer and GPU power you need. While this is a good place to start, it doesn't give you an idea of which laptops can do VR really well.
To guide you in the right direction, we list various recommendations for laptops that do the job and are great companions for your VR setup, starting with the Alienware M13 R3. Look at her!
Alienware M13 R3
When Dell updated the M13 to the latest R3 version, the company also made sure that this model was ready to handle VR experiences with ease. This highly scalable laptop features a 10th generation Intel Core processor, 16 GB RAM, a 15.6-inch HD screen and 512 GB SSD storage. It's also portable at around 4.65 pounds and has a durable (and fairly stylish) design.
However, pay attention to the GPU selection. The budget option for the Dell M13 R3 is probably not powerful enough for the best VR experiences. Instead, look for models with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, which is a good choice for VR. In general, you want a graphics option that is at least an RTX 2060 or equivalent to get the best results. There's not much room for graphic specs here, and the M13 has it where it counts.
Razer Blade 15 (2020)
The updated version of Razer's 15-inch laptop delivers all the performance you need for VR, with an 8-core 10th-generation Intel processor and discrete GeForce RTX 2080 graphics. It also has a 4K OLED killer display that's perfect for buyers who don't want to compromise. This excellent slot machine is rounded off by 16 GB RAM, a 512 GB SSD and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity as well as HDMI and USB-A connections.
The disadvantage of all this performance and the great display is the short battery life. You should make sure that it is plugged in before starting VR game sessions. In addition, gaming laptops that use only one battery typically throttle performance to reduce power consumption and heat. Therefore, your RTX 2080 will only work as expected when you reconnect the power supply.
MSI GS65 Stealth-006
This version of the MSI stealth laptop features GeForce RTX 2060 graphics, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD storage. When you add the 9th generation Intel Core i7 processor with overclocking up to 4.1 GHz, you have a machine that is absolutely ready for your VR headset. The 15.6-inch HD display also has a refresh rate of 144 Hz.
MSI has improved the cooling features of this model to prevent overheating problems. It is very impressive how much can be packed into such a slim laptop. The battery is designed for 8 hours, but this too can vary considerably. The ports include Thunderbolt 2 and USB-A connections.
Origin custom EVO15-S laptop
Origin PC specializes in desktop replacement gaming laptops that you configure on-site, right down to laptop color. We love this approach because you can easily customize a laptop specifically for VR experiences.
The base model for this 15-inch laptop starts at around $ 1,900. However, the total cost increases depending on the selection. You can easily see how much each option adds to the price. You can choose from a 10th-generation i7-10875H eight-core CPU, GeForce RTX graphics cards, up to 32 GB RAM, up to 2 TB memory, etc.
Note that you select the display and the GPU together. For example, the basic option couples the RTX 2070 to an FHD display at 144 Hz. The maximum is a 4K OLED screen that is supported by the RTX 2080 SUPER.
Lenovo Legion 5i Premium
We recommend this durable Lenovo Legion laptop with an important reminder: this computer has RTX 2060 graphics, but you'll need to add it as a customization option because the base GPU isn't quite able.
Fortunately, the other basic specs of this 2020 model are excellent, including a 10th generation Intel Core processor, up to 16GB of RAM, and your hard drive size as needed.
This Legion laptop has one of the largest screens on our list: a 17-inch FHD display that you can customize with a 144 Hz refresh rate. This is an ideal choice if you want to play and get into VR, although the extra size makes portability a little more difficult. We have some bags that can help.
Acer Predator Triton 500
Acer's Predator laptops are often great slot machines, and this special Triton 500 model is fully VR ready. It contains GeForce RTX 2060 graphics, a 9th generation Intel Core i7 processor, 16 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD. It contains an additional slot so that you can add an additional storage device in the future if necessary. The 15-inch HD screen also has a 144 Hz refresh rate.
Outside of the technical details, you get a full RGB customization for the keyboard that not all of our picks offer. In addition, Acer's latest fan technology works to keep the machine cool, while PredatorSense software gives you a lot of data and control over internal processes when you need to make changes.
