There is a lot to consider when buying the best laptop for programming. It's not ideal to take out a bank loan for the device you need, but you also don't want to rely on a snail to get the job done.
A laptop with a four-core processor works best when you consider that the code crunches and everything else runs in the background. On the memory side, programmers should have at least 8 GB of RAM, although 16 GB or more is ideal.
When developing games, consider a laptop with a discrete GPU. Programming tools that rely heavily on graphics can also benefit from a discrete GPU outside of games, although the integrated graphics in the eighth and tenth generation Intel CPUs may be sufficient.
Nevertheless, here you will find our selection of the best laptops for programming so that you can start working immediately.
Dell XPS 15
Many programmers love Dell's XPS ultrabooks. They are thin and light and have enough power to do the job. You can even find them on Ubuntu on the Developer Edition models.
The XPS 15 doesn't meet our desire for a discrete graphics chip, but it does make up for this shortcoming with the latest Intel processors, lots of fast memory, and a QHD + screen with one of the thinnest laptop bezels you can find. If you need something with graphics capabilities, upgrade to the XPS 15, which has built-in Intel UHD graphics. However, Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1650 4GB GDDR5 can be configured for $ 250.
This model includes the 9th generation Intel Core i5-9300H processor and integrated graphics that support a 15.6-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 3,200 x 1,800. Backing up the processor includes up to 32 GB of LPDDR3 system memory, which is clocked at 2,666 MHz, and up to 512 GB of memory on a fast SSD.
All of this is packaged in a lightweight design that measures no more than 0.66 inches at its thickest point and weighs only 4 pounds. The 2020 model starts at $ 1,273.
Surface book 3
Mark Coppock / Digital Trends
Microsoft offers two sizes of its Surface Book 3, but here we chose the larger 15-inch device. Technically speaking, the device is removable, although the keyboard's unique hinge acts like a 2-in-1 device that supports laptop, tent, stand, and tablet modes. The Surface Book 3 also supports Microsoft's Surface Pen and Surface Dial peripherals.
The Surface Book 3 is based on the 10th generation Intel Core i7-1065G7 processor and the discrete GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q chip (6 GB) from Nvidia. This means that the device is not only suitable for programming, but should also play the latest games in full HD resolution with high detail settings – there is plenty of dedicated video memory for large textures.
For this configuration and price, we're limited to 16 GB of system storage and a 256 GB SSD for $ 2,300. For those who need additional storage space, you can configure the Surface Book 3 with 512 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB SSD. This laptop is powered by a battery that promises up to 17.5 hours of video playback.
Razer Blade Studio Edition
The Razer Blade Studio Edition was specially developed for professionals and is elegant, powerful and professional. As with other gaming laptops, there isn't much visual flair, and it's thin too, measures just 0.70 inches, and has a takeoff weight of 4.88 pounds.
With this laptop, Razer offers four set configurations based on screen size and type: 13.3 inches with a 4K resolution and touch, 15.6 inches with a 4K OLED screen (without touch), 15.6 inches with one 4K OLED screen with touch and 17.3 inches at 4K with touch.
Under the hood, the hardware depends on these four configurations. The processors range from 9th to 10th generation Intel Core i7 chips, while the discrete graphics range from the GTX 1650 TI Max-Q to the RTX 2080 SUPER Max-Q. There is also a professional version of the 15.3-inch 4K OLED with touch configuration: Nvidia's Quadro RTX 5000 Studio Edition.
Other notable hardware includes up to 32 GB of RAM, up to 1 TB of storage, Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, three USB-A 3.2 Gen2 ports and an integrated IR HD webcam that supports Windows Hello.
Apple MacBook Pro 16
For Apple fans, you can't go wrong with the MacBook Pro and all the performance of the 16-inch model.
Apples MacBook professional is offered in two sizes, with the 13-inch available from $ 1,299. Here, however, we opted for the larger 16-inch device with the set configuration of $ 2,399. For this price, you get the Silver or Space Gray model with the 9th generation Intel Core 67 processor from Intel and the discrete AMD Radeon Pro 5300M GPU (4 GB). If that's not enough, it can be configured with the meatier Radeon Pro 5600M GPU. The base model also contains 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB on a fast SSD.
Other notable features include four Thunderbolt 3 ports (charging, DisplayPort, USB 3.2 Gen2), a 720p FaceTime HD camera, a backlit keyboard, Bluetooth 4.2 and wireless AC connectivity. The audio consists of two stereo High dynamic range speakers, 3.5mm headphone jack, three microphone array and support for Dolby Atmos playback.
The battery promises a standby time of up to 30 days (10 hours) from Movie playback).
For those who prefer a Linux-based option with easy third-party software integration, built-in security and virus protection, and automatic updates, the Pixelbook from Google is just the ticket. Users can also eat their cake by running Chrome OS and Android apps alongside Linux desktop programs with sandbox.
The Pixelbook from Google has an older 7th generation i5 or i7 processor, a 12.3-inch display with a resolution of 2400 x 1600, 8 GB or 16 GB RAM and a 10-hour battery that offers two hours of runtime with a charging time of 15 minutes. The default amount of storage is 128 GB. However, you can configure up to 256 GB or 512 GB if necessary.
Google Pixelbook can be deployed in four different modes, including tent, tablet, entertainment, and laptop. For those who are interested in drawing or other apps that require a pen, the Pixelbook pen offers natural functions for drawing, noting and other functions. The Gorilla glass and aluminum exterior reduces overall weight and helps cool the laptop.
Google's Pixelbook starts at $ 999.
