The best way to Make a Fence in Minecraft

Do you need to keep your cattle or imprisoned villagers alive and be in Minecraft? The best way to keep them at bay is to build a high fence or wall so nothing can escape. We'll show you how to build a fence along with gates and walls in Minecraft.

We added walls to this guide as they are waist-high by default like fences. Once you start stacking walls, the resulting structure is not completely solid. There are openings between the individual posts, creating an open castle. You can use a wooden gate to enclose the walled structure.

What you need

Wood – Find a lot of trees and cut them down. Your lumberjack skills cause small blocks of wood (survival mode) to be scattered across the terrain you need to collect. You can use any tool to fell trees – even your fist – except for a sword.

You can also use any type of wood to build your fence. However, you want to maintain a uniform appearance. Here are your wood choices:

  • acacia
  • birch
  • purple
  • Dark oak
  • jungle
  • Oak
  • Spruce

Minecraft clay

Clay – You need this for brick walls. Clay is under water. The blocks are mostly speckled in gray with different shades of gray.

Other stones and stones – If you don't want a brick wall, you can use other ingredients. You can of course find some of them, while others require craft:

  • Andesite
  • Black stone
  • Cobblestone
  • Diorite
  • End stone brick
  • granite
  • Nether brick
  • Sandstone
  • Stone brick

Let's start with creating a wooden fence!

Create wooden plank blocks

Minecraft make oak boards

First you need wooden boards built from every tree trunk you collect from trees. You can also use peeled wood.

Step 1: Open your inventory (see above) or your crafting table.

Step 2: Place one (1) block of wood in the craft grid.

Step 3: Drag the resulting four (4) wood plank blocks down into your inventory.

Step 4: Repeat these steps to get all the wood plank blocks you need.

Create warped wood plank blocks (Java Edition only)

You need this if you want to create a Warped Wood Fence in the Java Edition. The only ingredient here is Warped Stem Logs that you can collect from the Warped Forest in the Nether.

Step 1: Open your inventory or crafting table.

Step 2: Place one (1) Warped Stem Block in any square. You can also use peeled wood.

Step 3: Drag the resulting four (4) warped wood plank blocks down into your inventory.

Step 4: Repeat these steps to get the Warped Wood Plank blocks you need.

Create sticks

Minecraft Make Oak Wood Sticks

Here's the second ingredient you need to create a fence.

Step 1: Open your inventory (see above) or your crafting table.

Step 2: Place one (1) wooden board block in any square in the top row.

Step 3: Place one (1) wooden board block directly below in the second row as shown above.

Step 4: Drag the resulting four (4) sticks down into your inventory.

Step 5: Repeat these steps to get the sticks you need.

Create a wooden fence

Minecraft Make Oak Wood Fence

You can use any Wood Plank block to build a fence, including the Warped Wood Plank blocks in the Java edition, as previously described.

Step 1: Open your craft table.

Step 2: Place one (1) wooden board block in the top and middle square in the left column.

Step 3: Place one (1) stick in each of the top and middle square in the middle column.

Step 4: Place one (1) wooden board block in the top and middle square in the right column.

Step 5: Drag the resulting three (3) fences down into your inventory.

Step 6: Repeat these steps to get the fences you need.

Create a wooden gate

Minecraft Make Oak Wood Gate

You can surely jump over your new fence, but wouldn't it be easier to just walk through a gate? Sure it would.

Step 1: Open your craft table.

Step 2: Place one (1) stick in the top and middle square in the left column.

Step 3: Place one (1) wooden board block in the top and middle square in the middle column.

Step 4: Place one (1) stick in the top and middle square in the right column.

Step 5: Drag the resulting fence gate down into your inventory.

Step 6: Repeat these steps to get the fence gates you need.

Create a nether fence

Minecraft Netherrack

Now we are getting real and venturing into the Nether to get the ingredients we need to create a Nether fence. You need Netherrack to create a Nether Stone, which in turn forms a Nether Stone Block. Both have to build a nether fence.

While the colors below are difficult to see, Netherrack is a mix of reds from brown to light pink, as shown above. You will need a pickaxe to mine this ore with a skull pattern.

The construction of a nether fence consists of three steps. First we need bricks. That means you need the stove and fuel.

Part 1: Create nether stones

Minecraft Create Nether Stone

Step 1: Open your oven.

Step 2: Put fuel in the bottom square. This can be coal, charcoal, wood – everything you have that burns.

Step 3: Place a Netherrack block on the top square.

Step 4: Drag the resulting nether stone down into your inventory.

Step 5: Repeat these steps to get the nether stones you need, or simply place more than one fuel and one nether rack block on the fields. The oven will continue to produce nether bricks until resources are used up.

Part 2: Create Nether Brick Blocks

Minecraft Make Nether Brick Block

Simple stones will not be enough. We have to stuff some together to form blocks.

Step 1: Open your craft table.

Step 2: Place one (1) Nether Stone in the top and middle square in the left column.

Step 3: Place one (1) Nether Stone in each of the top and middle squares in the middle column.

Step 4: Drag the resulting nether brick block down into your inventory.

Step 5: Repeat these steps to create all of the required Nether Brick blocks.

Part 3: Build the Nether Fence

Minecraft makes nether fence

Finally, with Nether Bricks and Nether Brick Blocks in hand, we can finally create the fence.

Step 1: Open your craft table.

Step 2: Place one (1) block of Nether Stone in the top and middle square in the left column.

Step 3: Place one (1) Nether Stone in each of the top and middle squares in the middle column.

Step 4: Place one (1) block of Netherstone in the top and middle square in the right column.

Step 5: Drag the resulting six (6) nether brick fences down into your inventory.

Step 6: Repeat these steps to create all of the required nether fences.

Why don't you also learn how to make a nether brick wall since we play with nether? Again, they are as low as fences with protruding posts, but solid throughout.

Step 1: Open your craft table.

Step 2: Place one (1) block of Nether Stone on each of the three spaces in the bottom row.

Step 3: Place one (1) block of Nether Stone on each of the three spaces in the middle row.

Step 4: Drag the resulting six (6) nether brick walls down into your inventory.

Step 5: Repeat these steps as necessary.

Now let's drive through the rabbit hole and learn how to make a standard brick wall. Again, they are waist-high with protruding posts and a solid figure.

Create a wall

This requires three parts: create stones, create stone blocks and then the actual wall. To make bricks, you need clay that is under water.

Part 1: Create a stone

Step 1: Open your oven.

Step 2: Put fuel in the bottom square. This can be coal, charcoal, wood – everything you have that burns.

Step 3: Place one (1) piece of clay in the top square.

Step 4: Drag the resulting stone down into your inventory.

Step 5: Repeat these steps to create more bricks, or just add multiple fuels and clay into the grate. The furnace will continue to produce bricks until resources are used up.

Part 2: Create a Brick Block

Create Minecraft Brick Block

Now we have to create brick blocks because this game is all about crafting.

Step 1: Open your craft table.

Step 2: Place one (1) stone at a time in the top and middle square in the left column.

Step 3: Place one (1) stone in the top and middle square in the middle column.

Step 4: Drag the resulting brick block down into your inventory.

Step 5: Repeat these steps to get all the required brick blocks.

Part 3: Create a wall

Create Minecraft Brick Wall

We can finally make the brick wall!

Step 1: Open your craft table

Step 2: Place one (1) brick block in each of the three squares in the top row.

Step 3: Place one (1) brick block in each of the three squares in the middle row.

Step 4: Drag the resulting six (6) brick walls down into your inventory.

Step 5: Repeat these steps to get all the brick walls you need.

Minecraft Create a mossy cobblestone wall

Note: You can replace the brick blocks in step 2 and step 3 with andesite, black stone, cobblestone, diorite, end stone, granite, sandstone or stone. You can also use Mossy and Red variants like Mossy Cobblestone.

As shown above, you can fill line 2 and line 3 of the craft grid to create walls in addition to the line 1 / line 2 method in our instructions. It's about filling two connected rows with blocks.

It's a lot of tinkering, isn't it? Now we can put everything in the overworld.

How to place a fence or wall

Minecraft Place First Fence Post

Step 1: Make sure your fence or wall is in the hotbar and is selected for your main hand.

Step 2: Look directly at the floor on which you want to place the first fence or wall.

Step 3: Follow these steps to place your first fence or wall:

  • PC – Right-click on the target area.
  • Console – Press the left trigger button while looking at the target area.
  • Cell phone, cell phone – Tap the target area.

Step 4: For both the fence and the wall, you will only see a single post, as shown above. Aim at the next block and place your second wall or fence. You will now see two posts that are connected by two horizontal planks (wood) (see figure below) or a lower wall (brick).

Minecraft Place Second fence block

Step 5: Continue adding a fence or wall part until you create a closed area.

Tip: If you want to quickly throw up a fence or a wall. Simply hold down the left trigger or right mouse button while moving. You will fire blocks like a machine gun.

Step 6: To add a wooden gate, tear down a fence or brick block and replace it with a wooden gate block. You can open the gate by doing the following:

  • PC – Right-click on the wooden gate.
  • Console – Press the left release button while looking at the wooden gate.
  • Cell phone, cell phone – Tap the wooden gate.

Stack a fence or wall

Your fence or wall doesn't have to stay waist-high. Instead, you can "stack" these blocks to create a taller container for your captive animals or villagers.

Step 1: Aim at a corner post with your fence or wall currently selected in the hotbar and do the following:

  • PC – Right click on the wooden or wall post.
  • Console – Press the left release button while looking at the wooden or wall post.
  • Cell phone, cell phone – Tap the wooden or wall post.

Step 2: You can now see how the height of the wooden or wall post has doubled (see below). Follow the previous steps to build your fence or wall as normal. Only you are on a higher level.

Minecraft fence start second level

The result is a fence or wall that extends to the top of your virtual head. Do not build a second level fence or block of walls directly above the entrance – you will not fit through the opening as they are two blocks high. Instead, build a third level fence or wall block awning as shown below. Unfortunately, we forgot to add a skeleton skull to the awning before we took the screenshot …
