The Dell XPS 15 is a good choice for someone who needs more power in their laptop in addition to a larger screen. In 2020, a revised model with a larger screen with an aspect ratio of 16:10, thinner bezels and much more was launched.
If you want to pick one up, there is one, including memory, memory, processor, graphics and more. Here you will find everything you need to know to choose the one that suits you.
Dell offers three options for CPUs: the Intel Core i5, the Core i7-108750H and the Core i7-10975H. The Core i9-10980HK is expected to be available for the XPS 15 soon, although it is still available.
The processor you choose is important and, above all, defines performance. Now is the time to be honest with yourself. If you don't need the performance that discrete graphics and high-core processors offer, the base model is the right choice for you. The Intel Core i5 model still has four cores, a lot of computing power for heavy multitasking, web applications and light Photoshop work. This model is currently priced at $ 1,274 at Dell's online store, $ 26 less than the estimated $ 1,300.
Don't be confused by the "selling price". The prices for these configurations change frequently, but Dell often "discounts" them.
The jump from the base model starts at $ 1,715, which is $ 35 less than the estimated $ 1,750. That's a big price jump, but this is where most XPS 15 buyers will be looking for. Most potential buyers of the XPS 15 are content creators or those who need additional performance. This is exactly what these configuration sets offer you.
Thanks to Intel, there are two options for Core i7 configurations. The Core i7-10750H has six cores and twelve threads, while the Core i7-10875H has eight cores and sixteen threads. The difference in the number of cores is significant and increases performance for all multithreaded applications. It doesn't make a difference for games, but if you want to edit videos or photos with your XPS 15, the upgrade for $ 98 is worth the money.
The Core i9 model will also have eight cores, although it has a higher boost clock speed.
Memory and memory
The base model is the only version of the XPS 15 that cannot be customized. If you choose the Intel Core i5 model, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of solid-state storage are available. This base model is the leftmost option on the Dell website.
Once you've selected one of the Core i7 configurations, your customization options will expand significantly. Start RAM is still 8 GB, but you can then upgrade to either 16 GB or 32 GB. There's no reason to configure any of the Core i7 options without at least 16 GB of RAM – especially since it's only an upgrade of $ 98.
The move to 32 GB should only be reserved for those who specifically need so much memory. Dell charges an additional $ 147 to switch from 16 GB to 32 GB, which is still a solid price. It's even cheaper from manufacturers like HP, but Apple charges $ 400 for the same upgrade of its 16-inch MacBook Pro.
Dell also charges reasonable prices for memory upgrades. Configuration starts at just 256 GB, which is probably not enough for content creators who work with large files. I recommend starting with at least 512 GB. It is currently limited to 1 TB, although Dell previously indicated that larger capacities may be available in the future.
This year's XPS 15 has two display options. As a replacement for the 1080p option, Dell offers a screen with a size of 1,900 x 1,200. The new 16:10 aspect ratio, which is slightly larger than a standard 16: 9 laptop, is the reason for the odd screen resolution. Technically, there are more pixels, but the visual quality is similar to that of a conventional 1080p laptop. This 1,900 x 1,200 option is not touchable.
However, it's still a sharp screen, and you get at least a few hours more battery life if you don't upgrade to 4K. The 1200p display can be selected regardless of your processor.
However, the "4K +" model is only reserved for the Core i7 configurations. 3,840 x 2,400 is as pixel-rich as a screen that you can find on a laptop, and even surpasses the MacBook Pro 16-inch or Surface Book 3. Apart from its incredible sharpness, the 4K + model has a wider color gamut and one increased color accuracy. It's the best creative screen you'll find on a laptop. In addition, it is also a touch screen. It's an $ 294 upgrade that is only worthwhile for serious content creators and only offers about six hours of battery life.
It should be noted that OLED is no longer an option as in previous years.
Discreet Nvidia graphics are one of the key benefits of a larger laptop like the XPS 15. The options are simple. The basic integrated graphics that comes with the Core i5 model or the Nvidia GTX 1650 Ti in the Core i7 models.
You can't play more games on the Core i5 model than you can on a simple 13-inch laptop. The graphics from Intel integrated in UHD are simply not suitable for this.
However, the GTX 1650 Ti can handle some modern games quite well.
If you want even better graphics, you have to wait for the Dell XPS 17. This larger laptop is expected to have much more powerful graphics with configurations up to an Nvidia RTX 2060.
What about the old model?
Riley Young / Digital Trends
You can still buy the previous generation XPS 15(and at retailers like Amazon or Best Buy). The latest model doesn't have all the design innovations like the 16:10 screen, improved speakers, a larger touchpad and a thinner front panel. The older XPS 15 also has a different selection of ports, including HDMI and USB-A. The new XPS 15 has two Thunderbolt 3 ports, a standard USB-C 3.1 port, an SD card slot and a headphone jack.
The older model also has slower RAM, slightly poorer graphics, and a previous-generation Intel processor. However, the exchange is the price. The base model is around $ 200 cheaper, and this price difference remains pretty constant with the upgrade. If you want to save a few dollars and don't care about the design upgrades, the older XPS 15 is still a good option. This is especially true if you choose the powerful Core i9 and 4K OLED screen.
You can easily tell the difference by the Dell logo below the screen when the new model has removed it.
